After being chosen to host the Oscars and then having the offer rescinded for saying some pretty homophobic stuff, Kevin Hart has been on something of an apology tour. In our little horological world though, Kevin Hart is best known as the possessor of one of the largest, most ostentatious watch collections this side of Conor McGregor.
He recently stopped by the Late Show with Stephen Colbert just to tell Stephen that “he’s done” talking about the controversy. Putting aside the fact that Hart went on a talk show just to say he’s done talking, our collective mouths were agape when we caught a glimpse of the watch he was wearing.
Hart’s collection gets a lot of hate on blogs by “true” watch enthusiasts, mainly because his collection is oversized, diamond studded, and rarely dabbles in vintage. But, he’s got some cool watches including a yellow gold Paul Newman Daytona and a Richard Mille “Bubba Watson.”
On Colbert, Hart opted for something decidedly more subdued (at least visually), a Patek Philippe World Timer, Ref. 5131J-014. The watch’s case is 39.5mm in diameter, 18k yellow gold, with a sapphire crystal case back that exhibits Patek’s caliber 240 HU self-winding world timer movement. Patek doesn’t list the watch on its website anymore, but it can be found for about $140,000. Patek currently offers world timer watches in a number of other references, including in white gold and platinum cases. But, the brand has stopped offering the distinctive green-and-blue map dial that can be seen on Hart’s watch. The world timer is a quintessential, complicated dress watch fit for Hart’s more somber mood on Colbert’s set.
Well chosen, Kevin. By the way, Colbert’s choice of a red strap for his Apple Watch was boldly American, and something I also didn’t mind.
